Sealing your stone deck is probably not something most people think about regularly. Even a seasoned pool builder, like myself, can neglect to do this simple task until something kicks you in the butt to remember! This morning I went out to the pool, untangled the pool cleaner, and then I felt it… grit from the sand stone. I have a salt pool, but that’s not the problem. The problem is that, just like most people, I have not sealed my stone in years.
Why Must I Seal My Deck?
Did you put down salt during the last ice storm? I hope so, since trips to the ER are never fun nor cheap. However, if you have not sealed your stamped or stained deck and walkways, you run the risk of the salt damaging your concrete. The salt can find its way into the crevices and create mayhem chipping away at the surface. The solution is, you guessed it, SEALER. It is easy to do yourself and inexpensive to hire a professional to do it. It’s a miniscule investment for the massive return of peace of mind that you won't have to relay your deck for many years to come.
How Long Does it Last?
Some sealers claim to last up to twenty years; however, most sealers I have worked with seem to last no more than five years. The good news is that sealing is really easy. You will need tools such as a water pressure/power washer and a pump-up sprayer, both are available for rent or purchase at most home improvement stores. Be sure the tip for the pressure washer is a medium fan-spray tip, and the tip of the pump-up sprayer is designed for sealer. Pressure wash to clean your stone or deck surface and then let dry completely. Finally, simply apply sealer according to manufacturer’s directions. Keep the dogs, cats, and kids off the surface until completely dry. Salt pool or no salt, you’re good to go for the next three to five years.
