Now that it's officially winter, you might find yourself having trouble keeping your pool clean through winter. All the leaves are falling, and since you're not using your pool regularly, you might let skimming duties fall by the wayside. You might not think it's a big deal; you may even think, "Eh, I'll get to it later..." This is a bad idea and let me tell you why- your pool needs to "breathe" and letting your filters get clogged with leaves is a really good way to cause serious damage to your filtration system.
Keeping your Pool Clean
So what do you do? Obviously, the easiest answer is to simply clean that pool! Regularly skimming the leaves out of the pool and cleaning out your filter baskets will help the water move more easily through your filtration system. Old, wet, deteriorating leaves can and will get stuck in suction jets, eyeballs, your jandy, etc. Make sure you check all baskets and keep them clear of debris. Don't have time to do this? Hire a pro! Professional pool cleaning services work year round, especially in Texas, and are here to help you keep your pool in tip-top condition. We always recommend our buddy Shane Price of Destiny Pool & Spa for any servicing needs our North Texas/Dallas-area clients may have. He does a spectacular job and is always willing to answer any questions you might have and to teach you how to use your equipment.
Looking for a more permanent solution? Well, you can always try cutting down your foliage-producing plants and trees. We don't recommend this, because frankly, a yard without landscaping is like a Christmas tree without decorations- sure it still looks nice, but it's missing that je ne sais quoi that makes everything pop! Not to mention, you can rid your yard of all things herbaceous, but you can't go into your neighbor's yard and start tearing up his garden! That definitely makes for an awkward neighborhood Christmas party. So what do you do? For those who don't want to spend the winter cleaning up falling leaf after falling leaf, try installing a pool cover. There are a lot of options, and many cover companies can create covers for "freeform" pools, any shape pool outside of the primary shapes- oval, round, rectangle. This company , Pool Cover Specialists, is out of California, and they make both manual and automatic custom and standard retractable pool covers. You can also check out In The Swim- they are web-based and ship covers and other pool items nationwide. If you're looking to hire locally, try Pool Cover Resources. They are here in the DFW Metroplex and they service Dallas County, Collin County, and Tarrant County.
Clean it or Cover it!
So as you can see, your options are pretty simple- clean it or cover it! Covers are a pricey item upfront, but a good quality pool cover will last for years, whereas hiring a service throughout non-swim months might feel like money continuously spent on something you aren't currently using. There again, in Texas, where the weather can change at the drop of a Stetson, cleaning your pool regularly keeps it open for the season, just in case we get another triple-digit, mid-winter heat wave. Really, it all boils down to what's right for you and your family, but at the end of the day, the only goal is to keep your pool clean and free of system-choking leaves, so do that however you see fit. Doing so will ensure that your pool, and especially your expensive pool equipment, will remain in perfect working order for when it matters most- SUMMER!!!
